How to Keep Your Blinds Clean

 In Window Treatment Tips

When was the last time you cleaned your blinds? Blinds are great household furnishings. They block UV rays from entering your home, they help keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer, and they offer privacy. But cleaning them doesn’t always come easy. This is why we at Accent Verticals are offering tips to help keep your blinds clean.

Vacuum Blinds

For a quick and easy clean, close your blinds and vacuum them lightly using a soft brush attachment. Be wary of using non-brush tools as this may dent or scratch your blinds. Tilt the blinds in the opposite direction and repeat.

Wipe Down Blinds

Another easy way to clean your blinds is by putting a soft microfiber cloth over your hand or even a sock and wiping each slat from left to right.

Blow Dry Your Blinds

Your blow dryer can also go a long way toward keeping your blinds clean. Simply set your dryer on the cool setting and blow each slat of your blinds to remove dust. Just remember to vacuum up all of that fallen dust afterward to be certain you’re getting rid of the dust for good.

Spot Clean Blinds

If your blinds need a little more elbow grease you can spot clean them using a damp cloth and vinegar or dish soap. Just be careful with wood, fabric, and woven wood shades. They need to be handled more carefully to prevent warping. A good rule of thumb is that damp is okay and wet isn’t.

Deep Clean Blinds

If your blinds need more than a little spot clean, then you can bathe them. Fill your bathtub with warm soapy water and dip your blinds in. After they’ve soaked for a few minutes, wipe each slat with a sponge, rinse them, and hang them from your shower rod to dry. Keep in mind, this tip only works with plastic, metal, and painted blinds. You don’t want to immerse wood blinds, fabric blinds or woven wood binds in water as this will damage them.

Warnings and Tips for Cleaning Blinds

  • Never immerse wood blinds, woven wood blinds (bamboo), or fabric blinds in water. This can cause them to lose their shape or warp
  • Be wary of harsh chemicals, they can degrade some plastic blinds and produce chemicals or cause them to discolor
  • Read the owner’s manual that came with your blinds to learn more about care instructions
